Policy on the use of Generative AI

The journal allows limited use of Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) in the publishing process, with strict guidelines to ensure transparency and academic integrity.

Allowed uses:

  • GenAI tools may be used to improve the readability of generated writing and prepare images, although the author must ensure that they are the copyright holder and indicate this.

Prohibited uses:

  • GenAI should not be used for data generation, data collection, data analysis, or data interpretation.
  • GenAI may not be used to draft or write any part of the manuscript.
  • Since GenAI cannot take responsibility for a research study and may generate erroneous content,
  • GenAI cannot be recognized as an author.
  • Content generated by GenAI may not be used for citation – authors must reference the original source.

Disclosure and verification:

  • Authors must disclose all uses of GenAI in the research and preparation of their manuscript. This disclosure should appear in the Acknowledgements section, specifying the tool used, the purpose/need for use, and the extent of use (see the standard statement on “GenAI and AI-assisted technologies statement” in the article template).
  • Authors are responsible for verifying the accuracy, originality, and appropriateness of any GenAI-assisted results.
  • Failure to comply with this policy may result in rejection of a manuscript or withdrawal of the published work. Whenever authors have any concerns about the Policy, please contact the journal’s co-editors-in-chief directly prior to submission.

Using GenAI in the review process

Reviewers should not use GenAI in preparing a review, including:

  • uploading an article for review to GenAI
  • asking GenAI to summarize an article for review
  • asking GenAI to identify the strengths and weaknesses of an article for review
  • asking GenAI to issue a publication suitability assessment of an article for review
  • asking GenAI to write a review

Reviewers may use GenAI tools for linguistic editing.
